Teenage Emirati Champion for Greener Cities: Karan Shroff and his Book “Beneath The Desert Sky”
Dubai-based teenager Karan Shroff isn’t your typical beach bum. While his peers flocked to the ocean, Karan found himself drawn to the green haven of Safa Park. This fascination with nature blossomed into a passion for local flora and fauna, culminating in his book “Beneath The Desert Sky.”
From Curiosity to Book Creation
Karan’s interest intensified after his family moved to Dubai Hills, where tree-lined streets sparked his curiosity about the origin of these plants. Discovering most weren’t native, he embarked on a research journey to explore the UAE’s indigenous species and their environmental benefits.
“Beneath The Desert Sky” took two months to complete. Karan’s process involved initial research, followed by extensive travel across the country to photograph native trees and document his encounters with local wildlife. The limited online information on UAE fauna posed a challenge, but it also fueled his desire to explore natural habitats firsthand.
The Beauty and Benefits of Native Plants
Karan’s book highlights the beauty and resilience of the UAE’s unique ecosystem. He emphasizes the importance of using native plants that thrive in arid conditions with minimal water. This not only reduces water consumption but also promotes biodiversity and creates stunning natural spaces.
Al Ain Oasis, with its sprawling date palm groves, and Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary, teeming with flamingos and mangroves, are just a few examples Karan cherishes. He highlights the vast number of date palms in the UAE, exceeding 40 million.
Climate Change and the Need for Action
The growing threat of climate change, with record-breaking temperatures around the world, concerns Karan. He points out how climate change and urbanization are diminishing indigenous plants globally. Land clearing for development destroys local flora, while rising temperatures and harsher storms further threaten their survival.
Emirates Green Initiative: Building a Sustainable Future
Karan isn’t just raising awareness; he’s taking action. Inspired by his book, he founded the Emirates Green Initiative. Recognizing the impact of foreign plants on water usage, the initiative partners with local businesses to promote sustainable landscaping practices using native species.
But the mission has expanded. The initiative now advocates for eco-friendly construction materials, recognizing their positive environmental impact and ease of use.
Spreading the Message and Looking Ahead
Karan’s dedication is inspiring. His peers actively support his endeavors, and partnering companies wholeheartedly embrace the mission. He aspires to study sustainability and urban environments to further promote green practices in cities. Additionally, he hopes to contribute to global tree-planting efforts, making a difference for both communities and the environment.
